The Document Foundation annuncia LibreOffice 3.4, una nuova versione della suite libera per ufficio per la produttività personale rilasciata da una comunità di sviluppatori sponsorizzati e volontari, e supportata da una comunità globale di volontari. LibreOffice 3.4 è la seconda major release della suite dal momento dell'annuncio di The Document Foundation nel settembre 2010 e integra i contributi di oltre 120 sviluppatori (sei volte il numero di quelli della prima beta rilasciata il giorno dell'annuncio).

La maggior parte di questi 120 nuovi contributor ha iniziato a lavorare sul codice di LibreOffice da meno di otto mesi: un risultato eccellente rispetto a OOo, che in dieci anni aveva attratto un numero inferiore di sviluppatori indipendenti. "Noi ci teniamo agli sviluppatori, e i risultati si vedono", afferma Italo Vignoli, portavoce e membro dello Steering Committee di TDF. "I core developer hanno inventato il meccanismo degli easy hack, che permette agli sviluppatori volontari di conoscere il codice di LibreOffice in modo facile e divertente, mettendo alla prova i propri skill su progetti di piccole dimensioni e complessità".

"Una volta completati i primi easy hack, i contributor sono pronti per passare alle attività più complesse", commenta Michael Meeks, uno sviluppatore senior che lavora per SUSE. "Abbiamo investito una percentuale importante del tempo nella formazione dei nuovi sviluppatori, per aumentare il numero delle persone in grado di lavorare alla soluzione dei bug, e allo sviluppo di patch e funzionalità. Questo viene progressivamente riflesso nella qualità del software e nel numero di nuove funzionalità delle prossime release".

LibreOffice 3.4 aggiunge nuove funzionalità a Calc, con una maggiore velocità e una migliore compatibilità con i fogli elettronici di Excel, e Pivot Table - il nuovo nome di DataPilot - con il supporto per un numero illimitato di campi e i "named range" come fonte dei dati. L'interfaccia utente di Writer, Impress e Draw è stata migliorata in diverse aree, e diverse modifiche "cormetiche" sono state applicate alla versione Linux, con un miglior motore di rendering del testo e una migliore integrazione dei temi GTK+. Sotto il profilo del codice, diverse migliaia di righe di commenti in tedesco sono state tradotte in inglese, e oltre 5.000 linee di codice "morto" sono state rimosse da Writer, Calc e Impress.

La prima versione della serie 3.4, LibreOffice 3.4.0, è indirizzata ai membri della comunità e agli utenti più avanzati, e non dovrebbe essere utilizzata in ambiente aziendale. The Document Foundation ha spiegato che con la calendarizzazione dei rilasci - la migliore strategia per un ambiente di sviluppo cooperativo e distribuito - la versione migliore per un utilizzo a livello aziendale comincia dalla versione x.x.1. Per questo motivo, LibreOffice 3.3.x verrà aggiornato per diversi mesi, fino alla fine del 2011, a vantaggio degli utenti più prudenti.

The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.4.0, a major release of the free office suite for personal productivity developed by a community of sponsored and volunteer developers, and supported worldwide by local communities of volunteers. LibreOffice 3.4.0 is the second major release of the suite since the announcement of The Document Foundation in September 2010 and incorporates the contributions of over 120 developers (six times as many as the first beta released on the launch date).

The majority of these contributors have started to hack LibreOffice code less than eight months ago, and this is an incredible achievement if one recalls that the OOo project has attracted a lower number of contributors in ten years. "We care for our developers, and it shows", comments Italo Vignoli, a Steering Committee member and a spokesperson for TDF. "Our core developers have invented the mechanism of the easy hacks, which makes it simple and enjoyable for volunteer contributors to get to know LibreOffice code challenging their development skills with basic or elementary tasks".

"Once they have completed the first easy hacks, contributors are ready to scale to more difficult tasks", says Michael Meeks, a senior developer working for SUSE. "We spend quite a lot of time mentoring new contributors, in order to increase the number of people working on bug fixing, patches and features. This is soon going to be reflected in the quality of the software and the number of new features of future releases".

LibreOffice 3.4.0 offers several new features for Calc, with faster performances and an improved compatibility with Excel spreadsheets, and Pivot Table – the new name of DataPilot – with support for unlimited numbers of fields and named range as data source. The user interface of Writer, Impress and Draw has been improved with many new features, and several cosmetic changes have been applied to the Linux version, with a better text rendering engine and an improved GTK+ theme integration. Code wise, several thousand lines of German comments have been translated into English, and over 5.000 lines of dead code have been removed from Writer, Calc and Impress.

The first release of the 3.4 series, LibreOffice 3.4.0, is targeted to community members and power users, and should not be implemented in a corporate environment. The Document Foundation has explained that following its time based release schedule – the best strategy for a distributed and cooperative development environment – the best releases for such deployments start from x.x.1. Because of this, LibreOffice 3.3.x is going to be maintained for several months to come, until the end of calendar year 2011, for the most conservative users.
