AMD ha annunciato la disponibilità commerciale della video card Radeon R9 290X, la soluzione di punta della nuova generazione di controller grafici Radeon, con la quale il famoso chip designer punta a inaugurare "una nuova era nel PC gaming" e a insidiare, almeno in alcuni ambiti, la supremazia, finora netta, evidenziata dalla GeForce GTX TITAN di NVIDIA.
La Radeon R9 290X è basata sulla gpu a 28nm "Hawaii" che integra, tra l'altro, 2816 stream processor, 176 texture memory unit (TMU) e 64 ROP, mentre il suo core grafico raggiunge la frequenza massima pari a 1GHz.
Il collegamento del processore grafico con il frame buffer, implementato con 4GB di RAM G-DDR5 e veloce fino a 5.0Gbps, è realizzato con un ampio bus a 512-bit (la banda massima teorica è pari a 320GB/s).
Il processore grafico "Hawaii" supporta tutte le più recenti tecnologie che le software house hanno a disposizione per lo sviluppo dei game, ovvero DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.3 e Mantle, le nuove API introdotte dalla stessa AMD per rafforzare la propria posizione nel settore.
Simultaneamente all'annuncio ufficiale di AMD sono arrivati anche quelli dei partner AIB, come ASUS, VTX3D, PowerColor, Sapphire, XFX, Club 3D, MSI e HIS, che da oggi offrono la propria Radeon R9 290X (guarda la fotogallery): si tratta in tutti i casi di soluzioni pienamente aderenti al design reference fornito da AMD.
Il prezzo di riferimento della Radeon R9 290X, che AMD accredita di una potenza computazionale pari a 5.6 TFLOP con i calcoli a precisione singola, è pari a circa $549.99 nel mercato U.S.: si tratta evidentemente di un punto di forza per un prodotto che mira a infastidire la ben più costosa GeForce GTX TITAN di NVIDIA.
