13.10.2005 - Intel Donates $1 Million In Support Of Pakistan | ||
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 13, 2005 – Intel Corporation’s philanthropic arm, the Intel Foundation, will donate $1 million for disaster and humanitarian relief efforts related to the South Asia earthquake. The Foundation will also match dollar-for-dollar employee contributions in support of the relief effort through November. The donation will be provided through the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies and Mercy Corps International. "Support for our work in the early days of a crisis helps us reach the neediest victims of a disaster," said Mercy Corps CEO Neal Keny-Guyer. "As with the Indian Ocean tsunami, we are truly grateful for Intel’s timely contribution to our Pakistan earthquake relief efforts." Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini said, "I know many of our employees have families and friends in the earthquake impacted areas, and our hearts and thoughts go out to them and everyone affected by this tragedy." Formed in 1988, the Intel Foundation is funded solely through donations from Intel Corporation for the purpose of developing and funding educational and charitable programs. Its four member board of directors is made up of corporate senior managers and is chaired by Intel Chairman Craig Barrett. Its mission is to strengthen engineering and computer science education and increase participation in these fields by women and under-represented minorities; improve mathematics and science education for elementary school students; and foster the effective use of computer technology in education. The Foundation also supports the communities in which Intel has a major presence with donations to the United Way and through other organizations for disaster relief. Intel and its employees this year have donated more than $11 million in cash and in-kind giving to the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Intel and its employees’ total financial contribution to help victims of the Asian tsunami was nearly $5 million. In 2004, the Intel Foundation provided nearly $104 million to communities around the globe, including disaster relief funding for victims of earthquakes in Iran, and came to the aid of communities in Turkey, Korea, Pakistan and other areas impacted by natural disasters.
