La commissione Antitrust dell'UE ha inflitto una multa salatissima a Intel per abuso di posizione dominate nel mercato dei microprocessori: il gigante americano dei chip dovrà pagare 1.06 miliardi di euro. Si tratta della sanzione più alta mai inflitta dalla Commissione Ue. Il precedente record appartiene a Microsoft che nel 2008 fu costretta a pagare 899 milioni di euro.
Infatti per l'Antitrust il comportamento della società è stato non solo scorretto, ma ha violato norme fondamentali: "Intel - ha commentato il commissario alla Concorrenza Neelie Kroes - ha danneggiato milioni di consumatori europei agendo deliberatamente per tenere i concorrenti fuori dal mercato per i processori da computer per molti anni. Un'infrazione così grave e così sostenuta nel tempo delle regole antitrust Ue non può essere tollerata".
La posizione dominante di Intel non sarebbe frutto del caso, a detta di Bruxelles, ma di pratiche commerciali illegali. "La Commissione - si legge infatti nel comunicato - ha ritenuto che l'Intel abbia fatto ricorso a due specifiche forme di pratiche illegali. Primo, Intel ha dato sconti integralmente o parzialmente occulti a fabbricanti di computer a condizione che le acquistassero la totalità o la quasi totalità dei processori x86 di cui avevano bisogno".
Intel Corporation ha affidato al suo presidente e CEO Paul Otellini la replica ufficiale alla commessione europea Antitrust: "Intel" - afferma Otellini - "si oppone e si opporrà fermamente a questa decisione, che è sbagliata e ignora la realtà dei fatti che, nel mercato dei microprocessori, coincide un regime di mercato altamente competitivo".

"We do not believe our practices violated European law. The natural result of a competitive market with only two major suppliers is that when one company wins sales, the other does not. The Directorate General for Competition of the Commission ignored or refused to obtain significant evidence that contradicts the assertions in this decision. We believe this evidence shows that when companies perform well the market rewards them, when they don't perform the market acts accordingly."
"Intel never sells products below cost. We have however, consistently invested in innovation, in manufacturing and in developing leadership technology.
